About:

ChowNow is an online food ordering app that connects customers directly with local food establishments.

The Brief

Problem: ChowNow wants to create a way to help customers discover restaurants that offer healthy food options.

Solution Goals: Find the features that best contribute to helping users with food discovery and living a healthy lifestyle and integrate these features into ChowNow’s restaurant and customer apps.

My Role: Lead UI Designer and Prototyper
Project Type: Team of 3
Tools: Sketch, Invision, LucidChart

The Discovery Phase

ChowNow's Business Model

We wanted to understand as much about ChowNow’s goals as possible, so we created a business model canvas.

Feature Comparison

Next, we used a competitive and comparative analysis to weigh the influence of key features from both food ordering and fitness apps. From this we gained insight into what features were successful in these types of platforms.

Survey and Interviews

We interviewed users who frequented restaurants in search of healthy food options. From this we discovered the pain points users had with the food discovery apps they used.

Next, we conducted a survey in order to understand which features users wanted to see, expected to see, and what was already working for them.

Affinity Mapping

Using the information from the interviews and survey results, we analyzed our data through an affinity map.

The Ideation Phase

Feature Prioritization

Next, in order to give our users the best quality product we could, we created a feature prioritization chart.

Personas

We created both a primary and secondary persona to represent the customers and the restaurants. We decided to have a little fun with it and model our personas after characters from our favorite show, Parks & Recreation.

Original Site Map

ChowNow’s original site map is very simplistic with very few features.

Updated Site Map

With the update of the “health mode” feature and our “food guides”, users have a lot more guidance and control over their food preferences.

Introducing the Health Mode Feature:

The Design Phase

After reviewing our findings, we added new features to our wireframes and developed a prototype to check the efficiency and flow of the features.

As lead visual designer, I created and relied on this guide to stay true to ChowNow’s brand.

The Prototypes

Next Steps

For future updates to the app, our team suggests the following:

  1. Continue user research to determine what works and what needs improvement within the “health mode” feature.

  2. Create new iterations as trends and technology changes

  3. Create team for creative content and a quality control system to make sure the nutritional information provided by restaurants is accurate.
